The heart of South America
Bolivia, the overlooked gem of South America
Tucked between the well-trodden paths of Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Peru lies Bolivia — a country I think that is overflowing with raw, unfiltered and panoramic beauty. Many travelers circle around Bolivia by visiting Peru, Chile, Argentina or Brasil, however, Bolivia has so much to offer… still without the real mass tourism (except for a few spots that are more and more popular).
The surreal salt flats of Uyuni in the South-West part, the dense Amazon basin in the North and East part, and the high-altitude planes in the South and West part, Bolivia is a place that has stirred my soul and really surprised me everywhere.
From 2027 onwards, I will lead a yearly 11-day photography adventure tour in Bolivia with TRVL Photography! We will visit the altiplano, with the Salar de Uyuni as the epic centrepiece. We are looking at adding an additional trip to the amazon at the end of the altiplano trip.
In this gallery, I invite you to see Bolivia through my lens!

The High Lands
The Andean High Lands or the Altiplano. With an average altitude of 3750 meters, the Bolivian Altiplano provides literally breathtaking views of endless landscapes, salt lakes and colours. Due to the altitude, the sky has a darkblue tint and the colours in the landscape are very crisp!
Some impressions of the highest point in the “El Choro Trek“, a hike from 5000 meters near La Paz on the Altiplano to 1200 meters near Coroico in the Amazon.

Some impressions from a four day altiplano tour starting and ending in Uyuni and visiting coloured and salt lakes.

The lower high lands
The South Western Altiplano dives into the North and Eastern Amazon basin. In between, there is an area that is what I call “squeezed”. It is an amazing area where you really see can truly see waves in the landscape (ridges and folds) where the crust of the Altiplano plate is compressed and uplifted by immense forces. This creates surreal and breathtaking valleys, canyons and jagged peaks!

The Amazon basin
And then the low lands… the Amazon basin. Unlike the highlands, the amazon basin is overfull of life and greens. My highlight there was a trip of 7 days to the Parque Nacional Noel Kempff Mercado with its table mountain.
